Myanmar’s military junta claimed on Wednesday evening that it has seized control of Nawnghkio Town in northern Shan State from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).

According to a junta statement, its forces took control of all urban areas in Nawnghkio Township by 12 p.m. on July 16.

Myanmar’s junta regime claims it launched two massive offensive units, comprising nearly 600 clashes, to retake Nawnghkio Township. This area is strategically important to the junta as it housed the former headquarters of its artillery battalion.

The military’s statement indicates the offensives advanced via the Tawnghkam Village route and the Pyin Oo Lwin–Nawnghkio route.

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), however, has only released a statement confirming it moved its civil departments from the urban areas to other locations as fighting escalated in the town.

The ethnic armed group has also warned the populace in the township to be aware of the escalating conflict situation.

Myanmar junta troops have successfully re-entered Nawnghkio Town, marking its recapture after losing control over a year ago. Notably, Nawnghkio has become the first town the junta claims to have retaken by military means among those lost during Operation 1027.
