The junta’s military has continuously fired artillery shells into Nawnghkio, one of the townships controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northern Shan State, injuring a civilian, residents told Shwe Phee Myay.
On Friday at approximately 7 p.m., junta forces fired ten artillery shells into Nawnghkio Town. One shell struck Train Station ward, injuring 37-year-old resident Tar Ah Tu.
“They fired shells from a howitzer, injuring one man. Two houses were also damaged. Clashes continue to erupt in the Kangyi area,” a Nawnghkio resident told Shwe Phee Myay.
In a bid to recapture Nawnghkio from the TNLA, the junta’s military has launched an offensive, with junta forces now advancing into Kangyi village, located just 11 km north of the town.
As clashes draw closer to Nawnghkio town, thousands of residents from eight surrounding villages are fleeing.
At a press conference held on June 5, Lway Yay Oo, spokesperson for the TNLA, warned residents of Nawnghkio Township to be aware of security and safety concerns related to the ongoing clashes in the area.
TNLA and its allies seized Nawnghkio on July 10, 2024. The township is strategically important as a junction connecting northern and southern Shan State, making junta hubs like Pyin Oo Lwin and Mandalay City vulnerable to attack.
This is why, even during its own declared ceasefire period, the junta’s military aggressively fought to seize at least five outposts in Nawnghkio.
