Mai Rupa, Jun 5, Lashio

The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) is opening schools in 20 villages within its controlled areas near Lashio, the capital of northern Shan State.

The schools in these MNDAA controlled villages start accepting the enrollments of the students today free of charges, according to its statement.

The schools are currently opening in villages surrounding Lashio, including, Mal Han, Khay Nin, Nawngmon, Mansan Yaykya, Khar Shi, Manbyin, Thanlwin, Nampaung, Namma Bawda, Lwal Ngin, Shan Khite, Khite Shan, Nawng Lai, Ei Nine, Kone Nyo, Namhu, Aung Thitsar, Hopate, and Nam Kyan.

“The Education Department of Special Region (1) will administer these schools, which will not operate under the junta’s regime,” said a source close to the MNDAA.

Although schools in MNDAA-controlled areas began accepting enrollments today, the actual start date for the academic year has not been clearly stated.

The MNDAA also announced its support for schools in Special Region (1) to ensure they can open and operate effectively.

With Chinese engagement, the MNDAA was forced to retreat from 12 wards in Lashio, allowing the junta’s military to retake control of these areas. However, the ethnic armed group, a member of the Brotherhood Alliance, maintains control of the rural areas around Lashio.

In a statement released on May 25, the MNDAA also invited teachers who joined the Civil Disobedience Movement after the coup to serve at schools in its controlled areas.
