Junta artillery shelling killed a man in Naungtaw village, Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, according to the residents.

Junta military troops stationed at an outpost in Thayetcho village fired artillery shells into Naungtaw, killing U Sein Lwin, 63. The Thayetcho outpost is one that the junta recently recaptured from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.

“The junta’s military frequently shelled Naungtaw with a howitzer. A man died after being hit by shrapnel,” said a resident.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. today. Sein Lwin, 63, originally from nearby Anauk Kon village, was visiting Naungtaw at the time and was killed by the junta’s shelling. He leaves behind six children, a source close to the victim’s family told Shwe Phee Myay.

On May 20, the junta’s military launched a massive offensive against the TNLA, recapturing Thayetcho village, along with an outpost they lost previously. Since then, junta troops have continued to attack Naungtaw, located approximately 4.8 km away.

Earlier this month, the junta announced a one-month extension of its temporary ceasefire. On Thursday, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing further urged ethnic armed organizations to respect this temporary ceasefire, which was initially declared to support earthquake-affected civilians.

Despite the announcements for ceasefire, the junta’s military has continued operating its offensive against the TNLA outposts and it has already recaptured a number of outposts in Nawnglin, Thayetcho, Yarbyin, and Shwe Mutaw villages in Nawnghkio township.
