Two men were killed in an explosion around 5 p.m. on Sunday in Manawng Yan Ward 5, Namhpatkar Town in Kutkai Township in northern Shan State, according to the residents. The blast occurred while the men were collecting and attempting to dismantle unexploded ordnance.

“They died while trying to dismantle leftover military ordnance. Judging by the injuries to their heads and faces, it seems the explosion happened while both were leaning in to examine the device,” said a resident.

Both victims were residents of Namhpatkar—one lived in Manwang Yan and the other in Man Maw, he added.

Another resident said, “Apparently, one of them had picked up the device, and they were trying to dismantle it together when it exploded. Locals also said they had been drinking.”

The device was identified as an unexploded 60mm mortar shell left over from previous clashes. It reportedly detonated while the men were attempting to extract the explosive powder from inside, according to the residents.

A similar fatal incident occurred in October 2024, when two men from Pan Khar Village, also in Namhpatkar, died while attempting to remove gunpowder from an unexploded 60mm shell.
