Poe Labar, Apr 2, Muse

A verbal dispute between members of rival militia groups escalated into a shootout in Muse, a town on the China-Myanmar border currently under the control of the junta, according to the residents.

The incident occurred on March 30 in the Taw Ywet Ward of Muse. Two individuals were reportedly wounded during the gunfire.

“This happens quite often in Muse; they end up shooting at each other,” a local woman told Shwe Phee Myay.

“I heard the gunshots that night. I’m not sure exactly which groups were involved, but in Taw Ywet, there are only the Myoma and Man Jwel militias. I heard two were injured—one seriously, while the other’s injuries were less severe.”

According to the resident, brawls and skirmishes between different militia factions are a frequent occurrence in the junta-controlled border town.

This is not an isolated incident.

Also on November 7, 2025, a militia officer holding the rank of lieutenant reportedly opened fire on two of his subordinates with a pistol after a drinking session in Muse.

Muse is home to various militia groups operating under the military junta. These groups are known to manage diverse business interests, including online scam operations, gambling dens, narcotics trade and brothels.

In exchange for operating these illicit businesses, these militia groups pay regular “taxes” and fees to the junta’s military.
