The administration of junta boss Min Aung Hlaing, who recently assumed the presidency, has declared martial law in townships controlled by the ethnic armed organizations in northern Myanmar, including the United Wa State Army (UWSA), National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA), Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).

Included in the martial law declaration are Hopang township—captured during Operation 1027 and handed over to the UWSA by the Brotherhood Alliance—as well as Mongla township, controlled by the NDAA, and Mabein township, which was seized by the KIA during the same operation.

Additionally, the list of townships placed under military administration includes Namhsan, Manton, Namtu, and Namhkam, which remain under TNLA control, as well as Hsenwi, Kutkai, Kunlong, Laukkai, and Kone Kyan, currently controlled by the MNDAA.

Also included in the list are Kyaukme, Hsipaw, and Momeik, which the junta’s regime recently recaptured from the TNLA. According to the official announcement, Min Aung Hlaing declared martial law with the stated objective of “ending armed insurgency.”

The declaration covers a total of 55 townships, including 41 townships across six states and 14 townships across three regions. This martial law period is set to last for exactly 90 days.

Notably, this announcement follows congratulatory messages sent to Min Aung Hlaing’s new administration by the Chinese government, as well as the UWSA, NDAA, and TNLA.
