The Ta’ang Civil Society Organization (TCSO) released a statement condemning the military junta’s airstrikes between June and August 13, which killed 56 civilians.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the TCSO condemned the military junta’s airstrikes on crowded areas in townships controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), claiming the attacks were aimed at regaining control and holding general elections.
Based on figures compiled by the TCSO, airstrikes launched by the military junta over the past two months in the TNLA-controlled townships of Mogok, Mongngawt, Monglon, Nawnghkio, Kyaukme, Hsipaw, and Kutkai have killed 56 civilians, including 13 children. The attacks also injured 136 others, eight of whom were children.
The TCSO statement further detailed extensive damage to infrastructure, reporting the destruction of 218 houses, eight schools, eight religious buildings, eight hospitals, three hotels, and 23 other structures.
In the statement, the TCSO said that the military junta, with China’s coordination, is continuously pressuring the TNLA and its people both politically and militarily. The pressure includes cutting off supplies of food, medicine, and other commodities, as well as restricting border trade and communications.
The organization added that by providing weapons and technical support, China is enabling the junta’s terror campaigns, which the TCSO considers to be war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The TCSO, an umbrella group of six Ta’ang civil organizations, demanded that all countries, businesses, and neighboring countries immediately stop providing the junta with military equipment and aviation fuel.
The organization also called for economic sanctions to be imposed on the junta’s business cronies and on other countries cooperating with the military through financial channels.
The group also urged the international community to press for the immediate referral of the junta to the International Criminal Court for what it calls a blatant violation of international law.
It also called on the international community and UN member states to recognize and work with federal units and local governments to continue the work of building a future federal democracy.
