Mai A Shai, Aug 3, Tangyan
The United Wa State Army (UWSA) arrested an armed robbery gang that was posing as members of the ethnic armed group in Tangyan Township, northern Shan State, according to the residents.
U Nyi Rang, UWSA spokesperson, told Shwe Phee Myay that they apprehended 17 members of the gang and seized numerous weapons and ammunition.
“This gang has been committing crimes, including thefts and robberies, in Tangyan. Based on information provided by citizens, our security forces arrested 17 members of the gang. We also seized some arms, but I don’t know the full details yet,” he said.
Robberies and thefts have occurred in homes and jewelry shops in Tangyan this year. In the third week of January alone, three robberies targeting gold jewelry shops took place in the township, which has overlapping administrations between the junta’s regime and the UWSA.
Tangyan is one of the few townships that remain under the control of the junta’s military in northern Shan State. In July 2024, during the second phase of Operation 1027 initiated by the Brotherhood Alliance, UWSA forces entered the town and have maintained a presence there ever since.
