Poe Labar, Jul 10, Mawchi
The junta’s military launched an airstrike on Mawchi Town, Hpasawng Township, in Karenni State, killing six people, including a family of five, according to the residents.
Around 7:30 p.m. on July 9, a junta aircraft dropped two 200-lb bombs on Lo Law Htee village in Mawchi Town, killing six civilians and damaging several houses.
“One of the bombs landed directly on their house, and the entire family of five died. Those in the adjacent house were also affected, though we don’t know the exact number of injuries,” a resident said.
Mawchi is historically renowned for its mine, which was the world’s most important source of tungsten during the colonial era. Before World War II, the Mawchi Mine also contained the world’s largest granite-hosted tin-tungsten vein system.
The junta’s fatal airstrike on Wednesday evening marks the third time the historic mining town has been targeted this year.
On May 10, a junta airstrike on the town killed at least two people amid clashes between the junta’s military and allied Karenni resistance forces.
Previously, the junta also launched an airstrike on a mining plot in Mawchi’s Ward 15, where a 200-lb bomb killed at least seven mining workers and injured 40 other workers and residents.
The town was seized by the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) and allied resistance groups on January 28.
On July 7, the junta also launched an airstrike on an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Pekon Township, southern Shan State, bordering Karenni State’s Demoso Township. The attack killed three people, including a four-year-old child, and injured a pregnant woman and a man.
