Residents living in townships controlled by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) can now apply for Border Pass books to enter China, using residence cards issued by the armed group, according to the residents in Kunlong Township, northern Shan State, to Shwe Phee Myay.

“Applying for a Border Pass book costs 380 Yuan in Chinshwehaw,” a woman from Kunlong told Shwe Phee Myay.

She added that people who do not have residence cards issued by the Kokang army can still apply for China Border Passes if residents in the Kokang region recommend the applicant.

“There are no other requirements. The person recommending another only needs to bring the household registration and ID,” she explained.

Since the MNDAA withdrew from Lashio on April 21, the ethnic armed group has further restricted the entry of Bamar people into its controlled areas. It has also renewed residence cards for residents in its Kokang region.

At present, Kokang residence cards can be used to apply for China Border Passes. Furthermore, individuals from outside the region are eligible to apply for MNDAA-issued residence cards.
