The military junta announced that talks between its peace negotiation body and a delegation from the United Wa State Army (UWSA) are currently underway in Nay Pyi Taw.
The talks began on August 3. During the meeting, Lt-Gen Aye Win (Retd.), representing the junta, said the UWSA’s political aspirations should be addressed in accordance with the 2008 Constitution.
According to the junta’s statement, UWSA Vice Chairman U Kyauk Kaw An welcomed the military regime’s administration and expressed the group’s willingness to continue cooperating with the junta on peace initiatives.
The two sides also discussed regional development, including healthcare, education and transport infrastructure, as well as joint efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and online scam operations in UWSA-controlled areas.
The junta said the talks are scheduled to continue through August 4.
The junta delegation is led by Gen Yar Pyae, Chairman of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC).
The UWSA delegation is headed by Vice Chairman U Kyauk Kaw An, Deputy Secretary-General U Pauk Aik Kham and U Nyi Rang, head of the Lashio Liaison Office.
The meeting marks the second round of talks between the two sides since junta chief Min Aung Hlaing assumed the presidency, following a previous meeting on June 18 in Pangsang, the UWSA’s headquarters.
Member organisations of the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC), including the UWSA, National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA/Mong La), Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Shan State Progress Party (SSPP), have all held talks with the junta. Reports also suggest the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) may travel to Nay Pyi Taw for discussions.
Meanwhile, fellow FPNCC members, including the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the Arakan Army (AA), continue military operations against the junta.
