Lway Htwe, Jan 4, Mogok

An artillery shell exploded in junta-controlled eastern Mogok Township, Mandalay Region, killing a Buddhist monk and a woman, according to the local residents.

The shell struck Yadanar Thiri Monastery, located in front of the Basic Education High School (BEHS) in Lwal-Oo Ward, easternn Mogok, at around 8:00 a.m., today.

“A monk was killed instantly in the initial blast. A woman who came to check the scene was hit and killed when a second shell struck the same area shortly after,” a neighborhood resident said.

“I only heard the sounds; I didn’t go out to look myself. But when my family members went to check, they said people had been killed. As far as I know, junta troops had been staying at that location about four or five days ago,” a local resident said.

At the time of reporting, gunfire had ceased, but authorities had not yet retrieved or cleared the bodies from the scene.

In a similar incident on December 24, 2025, a school in Auk Pein Pyit Village—where junta’s military forces were stationed—was also targeted in a drone bomb attack.

Although the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) was forced to surrender control of Mogok to the junta, the Mogok Strategic Command under the People’s Defense Force and other allied revolutionary groups announced on October 29, 2025, that they would continue efforts to defend the city.

On December 24, the National Unity Government (NUG) also issued a statement pledging to confront junta’s military troops entering Mogok and Momeik townships.
