Venerable Bhaddanta Kakanda, known as Yay Pu Sayadaw of Mogok Township in Mandalay Region, who is a prominent figure in opposing the military dictatorship following the 2021 coup, passed away at 6:45 p.m. on Monday.
Venerable Yay Pu Sayadaw was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for intervening to stop the junta military’s violent crackdown on anti-coup protestors following the 2021 takeover.
He was widely respected for his unwavering dedication to altruistic work, including the establishment of free schools for children. He also led efforts to conserve the environment and protect religious land in Mogok.
At the time of his passing, the Sayadaw was 55 years old and had served in the Buddhist monkhood for 35 years.
