Two Chinese technicians died at an online scam center in Muse, a junta-controlled township on the China border, in northern Shan State, after a fight with members of the militia group that owns and operates the center, an investigation by Shwe Phee Myay.
On May 10, around 12 p.m., some Chinese technicians at a scam center in Ho Nar ward, Muse, near the small bus station, quarreled with a supervising militia member, leading to a fight.
A Chinese man died on the spot then two others were severely injured. And on Friday, one among them died at around 9 a.m., according to a source close to the militia group.
“The militia members were indeed in the wrong. The Chinese technicians were resting after finishing their duty when the militia supervisor began scolding them with foul language. One Chinese man died on the spot, and another, with severe internal injuries, died on Friday morning,” explained the source.
According to a reliable informant within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) under the junta’s regime, U Aik Myo, owner of the scam center, arranged to dispose of the dead Chinese men’s bodies with the help of the CID and the Special Branch (SB), another intelligence unit under the junta’s police force.
Muse now has a total of 143 scam centers, an increase from 129 a few months ago when 14 new centers opened in different online scam compounds in the township. This information comes from documents detailing the bribe fees regularly charged by the SB, CID and the District Police Chief’s personal security officer, obtained by Shwe Phee Myay.
The 14 new scam centers opened in Kaung Muu Tone, Swam Saw, and Ho Nar wards. Most are located near the homes of former and current ward administrators who are staunchly loyal to the junta.
A few months ago, the total monthly bribe fees a scam center had to pay to the SB, CID, District and Township police, and other police branches was 30 million kyats. This fee has now increased to 33 million kyats per month, according to the documents supplied by the reliable sources.
