Tensions have escalated between the junta’s military and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) following the collapse of talks a few days ago regarding the return of Hsenwi Township in northern Shan State, according to the reliable sources.

The talks were held behind closed doors at the Two Elephants Hotel in Lashio a few days ago.

Following the inconclusive talks, the junta’s military is bolstering its forces by deploying more troops and installing artillery weapons at the Infantry Battalion 41 base. Meanwhile, the MNDAA is also deploying additional troops near Lashio.

“The MNDAA has advanced its position into Man Ai ward in Lashio. Previously, they were stationed outside the city, but now it’s like they’ve moved a step forward. We need to observe this situation,” said a resident.

The MNDAA has ordered residents in villages surrounding Lashio City to switch off lights at night.

Shwe Phee Myay is attempting to contact the MNDAA for official confirmation regarding the talks on Hsenwi town, but they have not yet replied.

Unverifiable reports that the MNDAA is likely to hand Hsenwi Town back to the junta in September were circulated last month.

The MNDAA and allied resistance forces seized Hsenwi Township, northern Shan State, in January 2024.
