Lway Lao Jar, June 2, Lashio

The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) suffered at least 10 casualties, with some injured, in recent clashes with the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) that broke out between Nar Lai and Nam Loat villages in Han Nar village tract, Lashio Township, northern Shan State, according to the residents.

An SSPP statement said that MNDAA forces ambushed their troops around 2:30 p.m. on June 1 as they were advancing in the area.

“At least ten Kokang soldiers died, and some were injured. The SSPP troops were stationed at the entrance of Hein Lwam village, while the Kokang army troops were at Han Nar village. The SSPP wanted to go to Nawngmon,” said a resident.

However, the Kokang army wouldn’t allow them to use the main road; instead, they directed them to rural and jungle routes. As the SSPP proceeded via those jungle routes, the MNDAA followed them from behind, leading to clashes, he explained.

Residents also said that the MNDAA has prohibited people from Nar Lai, Han Nar, Hein Lwam, and Kaung Kaw villages from leaving their villages. The MNDAA also warned that it would arrest anyone seen moving around.

“The Kokang army doesn’t allow people to travel between Han Nar and Hein Lwam villages. The SSPP hasn’t issued any warning yet. The Kokang army has also removed flags installed at the entrance of Han Nar village. For now, we simply have to stay in the village and in safe places,” a resident said.

The tension between the SSPP and MNDAA remains intense as both sides are strengthening their troops in the area by sending reinforcements.
