A teenage boy was injured after hitting a landmine while clearing a yard in Nar Show Village, Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, an aquauaintance of his family told Shwe Phee Myay.
Maung Nyein Chan Thu, aged 15, was injured in his eyes and both hands after hitting a landmine while clearing a yard at around 11:30 a.m. on September 15.
“They had been displaced for a long time, and since they hadn’t been back home in a while, the fences were messy, so they were coming to clean them up. While clearing the yard there, he hit a landmine and injured his eyes and both hands. The mine wasn’t a big one. It looks like it was an improvised mine,” said the source.
The teenage boy, who was injured by the mine, is currently receiving medical treatment at Pyin Oo Lwin Public Hospital and requires assistance for his medical expenses.
Furthermore, the source said that on September 22, a woman in her 40s from Nar Show Village also stepped on a landmine and lost one of her legs.
According to the figures compiled by Shwe Phee Myay, seven people, including two children, were killed by landmines in northern Shan State during the seven months period from last January to July. Additionally, 21 people, including five children, were injured.
