A man familiar with the incident told Shwe Phee Myay that six men from Man Hphar Village in Monekoe Town (https://shwepheemyay.org/…/mndaa-flag-still-flies-as…/), Muse District, northern Shan State, were detained and taken away by forces of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).
On the night of June 28, MNDAA soldiers and police personnel reportedly entered the village and carried out the arrests.
A man with knowledge of the incident said the case stemmed from an internal village dispute.
“The issue stems from an internal village dispute. A widow from the village kept bringing a man from another village into her home, which the villagers objected to. Since she kept bringing him over every night without getting married, and talking to them did not work, the villagers beat the man she brought over to teach him a lesson. When the woman complained to the MNDAA (https://shwepheemyay.org/…/mndaa-parades-five-theft…/), Kokang authorities came into the village and arrested six local men. They have not been released yet. Since it is the farming season, everyone is busy, and being detained like this is disrupting their work,” he said.
The man added that the MNDAA is reportedly demanding a fine of 500 Yuan per person from the six detained men and intends to keep them in custody for 10 days.
“Although they only arrested six people, the village is so small that it accounts for almost all the young men. In reality, the woman and the man who were beaten should be punished. They continued their behavior despite warnings from villagers, bringing shame and damaging the reputation of the village, which is also a Buddhist village. The MNDAA should not be arresting villagers and imposing fines like this; they are escalating a minor issue into a bigger one,” he said.
Man Hphar Village, where the residents were detained by the MNDAA, is a small settlement with about 10 households.
