Mai Rupa, Oct 16, Lashio
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) released nearly 50 junta prisoners of war (POWs) captured during Operation 1027 and transported them to Lashio, sources in the city told Shwe Phee Myay.
Specifically, on the afternoon of October 14, the MNDAA handed over 46 junta prisoners of war to the military hospital in Lashio, the capital of northern Shan State, which is currently under junta control.
“On Tuesday, Kokang forces (MNDAA) delivered the 46 POWs to the junta’s military hospital. I’m not sure if there was any exchange involved, but I believe they were high-ranking personnel,” a military source in Lashio told Shwe Phee Myay.
The MNDAA has frequently released junta prisoners of war since transferring control of Lashio’s urban areas to regime forces.
While the MNDAA returned its controlled zones in Lashio to the junta last April following Chinese mediation, the ethnic armed group continues to hold villages on the outskirts of the city.
After regaining control of Lashio, junta’s military demanded the return of Hsenwi, a township currently held by the MNDAA. However, the Kokang ethnic armed group refused to comply.
