Poe Labar, June 30, Kaung Tat
The reconstruction committee for Kaung Tat village in Namhkam—a township controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northern Shan State—will provide up to 100 million Kyat per destroyed home to aid rehabilitation efforts, a committee member told Shwe Phee Myay.
All donation funds contributed by local and international donors, alongside ethnic armed groups, are being distributed to rebuild destroyed homes. Starting June 13, the TNLA and civil society organizations have been disbursing these funds to families whose properties were damaged or lost during the explosion in Kaung Tat village, with payouts allocated based on the severity of the damage.
“Initially, we planned to build uniform housing for everyone,” a reconstruction official explained.
“However, because some residents requested specific structures like bamboo or wooden homes, we adjusted our approach and provided direct cash payouts instead. The funding is calculated based on the original property type—such as a two-story, three-story, or bamboo home—meaning individual payouts vary. Some families received 80 million Kyat and others 50 million, while minor structural repairs were allocated around 2 million. Still, a few residents have rejected the aid, claiming the compensation is insufficient.”
Between June 1 and June 17, the Kaung Tat Village Reconstruction Committee pooled a total of 2200 million Kyat in cash donations, in addition to 28,000 Chinese Yuan (valued at roughly 150 million Kyat).
Additionally, the economic department of TNLA contributed 4000 million Kyat in financial aid to support families with destroyed homes. Donors continue to come forward to contribute to the reconstruction of Kaung Tat village, and the committee’s fundraising campaign remains active.
A gelignite depot explosion at a TNLA warehouse on May 31 killed 41 local residents and injured 154 others. The blast caused widespread devastation, destroying 680 homes, including more than 40 properties that were completely reduced to ashes.
