The junta’s military has sent 20 trucks of reinforcements from Pyinoolwin, a key hub in Mandalay Region, to Nawnghkio in northern Shan State. The move comes as clashes intensify with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which controls the township, according to frontline sources.

Since the second week of June, the junta’s military has sent reinforcements from Pyinoolwin to Ohmmti village in Nawnghkio Township. Beginning June 15, these newly arrived troops launched attacks on a TNLA outpost, leading to daily clashes in Nawnghkio.

“The junta’s military has sent around 400 troops with 20 trucks from Pyinoolwin. Since their arrival, clashes have intensified almost daily around Ohmmti,” a frontline source said.

The junta military unit that reached Kangyi village has now advanced to Shwe Nyaungbin village. Around Wednesday midnight, the junta also deployed a fighter jet to the area, dropping four bombs on Kangyi village.

“Junta troops in Kangyi have advanced to Shwe Nyaungbin and Thayet Kone areas. The TNLA has continued to resist strongly, specifically to prevent junta troops from entering Nawnghkio Town,” the source added.

Shwe Nyaungbin, where junta troops have now arrived, is located just 8 km north of Nawnghkio town.

Using overwhelming forces, the junta’s military is attacking TNLA strongholds around Tawnghkam and Ohmmti villages in a bid to reclaim Nawnghkio Township.

At a press conference held on June 5, Lway Yay Oo, spokesperson for the TNLA, warned residents of Nawnghkio Township to be aware of security and safety concerns related to the ongoing clashes in the area.

The TNLA and allied resistance forces seized Nawnghkio Township in July 2024 during the unprecedentedly successful Operation 1027.
