Basic education schools operated by the junta regime in Lashio, the capital of northern Shan State, have begun accepting student enrollments this week, charging hefty fees for each student, according to the residents.

Schools under junta regime in Lashio, which recently regained its control of the city with Chinese engagement, commenced accepting student enrollments from primary to high school levels on May 22, a resident confirmed.

“Schools began accepting enrollments on Thursday,” he said.

“That same day, teachers from Basic Education High School (4) charged 100,000 kyats as a school building fee. However, by the next day, I believe they were ordered to stop, as they are no longer collecting it. Our ward administrator also advised us not to pay it even if asked.”

Parents of students at BEHS (8) in Lashio have also reported that the school’s teachers are collecting 100,000 kyats from each student to repair a war-damaged school ward.

The junta military regime has announced that schools in Lashio will reopen on June 1, aligning with the nationwide schedule. Furthermore, it declared that all basic education schools across the country are mandated to accept students without charge.
