Mai Rupa, July 1, Nawnghkio
The junta’s military is launching airstrikes on Nawnghkio, a township controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northern Shan State, using 500-pound bombs and firing howitzers, according to residents.
At around 10 p.m. on June 29, the junta’s military dropped two 500-pound bombs into the market ward in Nawnghkio Town, destroying some houses. An hour later, the junta’s military began firing shells into the town with howitzers, continuing until Monday morning, a resident reported.
“At 10:22 p.m., the junta dropped two 500-pound bombs. There are no injury or casualty reports, but some houses were destroyed. Then they continued firing howitzers until the morning,” he told Shwe Phee Myay.
In a bid to retake Nawnghkio Township, the junta’s military is launching an offensive using over a thousand troops against the TNLA.
Recently, clashes have intensified between the junta’s military and the TNLA in Nawng Aw and Myat Chee Nu villages near Nawnghkio Town.
As clashes escalate in Nawnghkio, thousands of residents are fleeing the township, Shwe Phee Myay was told.
Additionally, the junta’s military also launched airstrikes into Kyaukme Township, which is also under the control of the TNLA. These recent airstrikes killed at least 5 civilians and left over a dozen with severe injuries.
