The Goke Hteik and Bypass Road in Nawnghkio, a northern Shan State township controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), have been cut due to the escalating clashes between the ethnic armed group and junta military troops, who are launching an offensive to retake the township, frontline sources sad.

“Junta troops have approached from Kyauk Kyan and are still shooting from an area below it. We don’t know the situation in Nam Saung Hu yet,” a source said.

Residents reported that the township’s bypass route and Goke Hteik road are temporarily closed due to the escalating clashes.

Ongoing clashes in Nawnghkio are forcing travelers from Kyaukme to Mandalay to take a significant detour, a source at Kyaukme’s highway bus station reported.

Instead of the direct route, they now travel from Kyaukme to Hsipaw, then through Namlan in Mongyai Township, across to Loilem Township, southern Shan State, on to Taunggyi, the Shan State capital, and finally to Mandalay.

To retake Nawnghkio Township, the junta’s military has launched an intense two-pronged offensive. One unit, advancing from the Ohmmati village area, has now arrived near Kyauk Kyan. Meanwhile, the second unit, approaching from Tawnghkam, is currently near Nam Saung Hu village, located by the junta’s former 606 Missile Battalion headquarters.
