Mai Rupa, June 9, Nawnghkio

Clashes between the junta’s military and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) are intensifying at Shauk Chong village, Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, according to a frontline source.

“The junta’s military hasn’t been able to seize Kangyi village yet, and there’s still a deadlock for both sides. Starting from 5 p.m. on Sunday, clashes also broke out in Shauk Chong as junta troops advanced into that area,” the source said.

Despite no clashes in Kangyi on Sunday, the junta’s military launched artillery and drone attacks on the village, a resident said.

The junta’s military troops, launching a massive offensive to retake Nawnghkio Township from the TNLA, have approached areas such as Kangyi and Shauk Chong villages, and are also firing artillery shells into the town.

On June 6, the junta’s military fired 10 artillery shells into Train Station ward in Nawnghkio Town, killing Tar Ah Tu, a 37-year-old resident.

With clashes nearing the town, residents report that over a thousand of people from eight villages around Nawnghkio are fleeing.

At a press conference held on June 5, Lway Yay Oo, spokesperson for the TNLA, warned residents of Nawnghkio Township to be aware of security and safety concerns related to the ongoing clashes in the area.
