Mai Rupa, May 19, Nawnghkio
A displaced person was killed by a junta military sniper in Ohmmati village, Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, where the clashes are frequently breaking out between the junta’s military and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
At around 8 a.m. on Sunday, a junta military sniper fired to Aik Hlaing, 27, a displaced person taking shelter in Ohmmati village, according to the statement released by the TNLA today.
Although no heavy clashes have been reported between the junta’s military and the TNLA in Ohmmati, Tawnghkam and Nawnglin villages in recent days, the junta’s military is continuously launching artillery shelling and drone attacks, a TNLA source on the front line told Shwe Phee Myay.
“The fighting is still quiet, but on May 17, the junta military troops in Banbwe fired artillery shells into Tawngkya and severely injuring three villagers,” he said.
Also on May 14, the junta’s military launched an airstrike on Thone Sal village in Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, which is controlled by the TNLA, leaving five people with severely injuries.
Following an unsuccessful China-brokered dialogue in Kunming at the end of April, the junta’s military has continuously launched artillery and airstrikes into TNLA-controlled Kyaukme, Manton, Mogok, and Mongngawt towns, resulting in civilian casualties.
Although the junta’s military council announced a ceasefire until the end of May, it continues to launch attacks on TNLA-controlled areas using drones, airstrikes, and artillery shelling. Consequently, the TNLA has warned residents in these areas to remain alert and conflict-aware.
