Shwe Phee Myay, May 12, Hsenwi
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) paraded five individuals arrested for theft and drug dealing, through Hsenwi, a township under its control in northern Shan State, according to the residents.
On the morning of May 9, four men and one woman—accused of motorcycle theft, cable theft, and drug dealing—were paraded through Hsenwi’s central market and downtown area. Signs were hung around their necks, and they were forced to shout out their crimes of theft and drug distribution.
“Some people pitied them, while others mocked them. You could see the shame on their faces as they walked,” a local woman said.
She added that the MNDAA’s practice of publicly parading offenders in Hsenwi is intended to intimidate the public.
Another local man stated that the surge in theft is due to a lack of jobs for locals, noting that since the MNDAA moved into Hsenwi, there has been an influx of Chinese businesspeople and workers.
“People don’t have jobs. They [the Chinese businesses] don’t hire local workers. Since they are also seizing land, people are likely doing whatever they can to survive,” he said.
Previously, on April 10, the MNDAA sentenced and punished six locals for crimes in Lashio Township in front of a public audience.
In 2024, the MNDAA also carried out the public execution of three individuals convicted of crimes in Mone Koe.
