Tragedy of Landmines: Lives Lost
Although the fighting in this area has subsided, people continue to lose limbs and lives to unexploded ordnance and landmines.
Daw Htu Aung, a Kachin ethnic woman, and her family live in Yawt Jing Village, Manton Township, where they primarily depend on farming for their livelihood.
In addition to farming, they spend their free time foraging in the forest, collecting edible roots, tubers, and vegetables to sell and earn extra income for household expenses.
On September 19, Daw Htu Aung’s husband, U Hkawng Lum, was foraging for velvet flowers in the forest when he stepped on a landmine near the former camp of junta military’s Infantry Battalion 130 and was killed.
