A Mother’s Loss: Son Killed, House Obliterated in Junta Airstrike
“We had only lived in that house for eight years. I can’t bring myself to go back—it’s just too painful. I miss it deeply. We built that home with our blood and sweat. We weren’t wealthy like others. If we earned one kyat, we spent only a quarter and saved the rest for that house. That’s how much it meant to us.”
More than five months after a junta airstrike destroyed her home and claimed the life of her only child, Daw Sein Sein says she still cannot forget the tragedy.
She emphasized that the loss was not merely physical, stating that the attack didn’t just destroy their house—it shattered her family’s entire dream.
On May 12, the junta’s military dropped a 500lb bomb on a densely populated area in Aung Chan Thar Ward, Manton, a township controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northern Shan State.
The airstrike destroyed more than 20 houses, killed Daw Sein Sein’s son, Maung Shein Min Thant—aged around 20—and injured six others.
