The United Wa State Army’s justice department has sentenced a man and a woman to long prison terms and heavy fines for the repeated torture of their 12-year-old babysitter, according to the WSP, a UWSA mouthpiece.

Zhao Yanyi and Ye Ga used a kitchen knife, a wooden stick, a hammer, and other items to torture the girl, Xiao Xiang, in February, WSP reported.

Xiao Xiang sustained severe injuries, including wounds to her head, a broken rib, and a fractured spine. She also showed symptoms of anemia and had many other wounds covering her body.

The UWSA’s justice department sentenced Zhao Yanyi to 16 years in prison and Ye Ga to 20 years. Ye Ga was also fined 30,000 Yuan. The couple was sentenced for “seriously and intensively violating the child’s rights and committing the tortures.”

In addition, the UWSA has stated that it will implement a zero-tolerance policy for crimes against children and will resolutely dismantle criminal networks involved in drug-related activities.
