Strong winds have destroyed more than 100 waterfront shops in Mongla, eastern Shan State, according to the residents.
Heavy rains lashed Mongla around 4:00 a.m. on March 10, causing significant damage to shops situated along the banks of the Nam Khite Creek.
“The rain was incredibly heavy that day, and the winds were extremely violent,” a local man told Shwe Phee Myay.
“It wasn’t the main market area, but rather the stalls set up along the waterfront near the bridge. Fortunately, there were no injuries. There are many shops in that area; the ones that were destroyed were mostly makeshift huts and stalls covered with tarps. Everything from their merchandise to their food supplies was blown away by the wind.”
He added that the 24-hour shops near Nam Khite Creek bore the brunt of the storm. Similar weather patterns in eastern Shan State often prove more dangerous; in Tachileik, for example, annual heavy rains frequently cause urban flooding, which has led to multiple cases of people being swept away and killed in the past.
