Reports indicate that Hsenwi town in northern Shan State, seized by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) — also known as the Kokang Army — during Operation 1027 Phase 1, will be handed back to the junta.
While reports suggest Hsenwi town will be handed back to the junta’s military regime by September, a source close to the Kokang Army told Shwe Phee Myay that the possibility of this is low.
“They are planning to expand and continue operating the hospital. They’re still collecting local information, so it’s unlikely they’ll withdraw anytime soon,” said the source.
With China’s engagement, the MNDAA withdrew from Lashio and handed control of the city to the junta on April 22. Similarly, regarding the current situation in Hsenwi, although the reports remain unverified, one thing is certain: if China increases pressure on the MNDAA, it is believed the town could be handed back to the junta again.
Hsenwi Township, located on the Myanmar-China Union Highway, was seized from the junta’s military by MNDAA forces and other resistance allies during Operation 1027 on October 27, 2023. Operation 1027 was initiated by the Brotherhood Alliance.
