37 detainees escaped from the prison in Kutkai, a township controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northern Shan State, on the night of October 1, sources in town told Shwe Phee Myay.

According to a source familiar with the incident, the escape occurred during a guard shift change at the prison.

“The detainees who were being held outside broke the door lock while the guards were switching shifts. Once the door was forced open, those inside took the opportunity to flee,” said the source.

On November 2, one of the 37 detainees who escaped from the prison in Kutkai was reportedly shot, while the remaining individuals are still on the run.

Some detainees remain in custody, though the exact number has not been confirmed.

While most of the escapees are believed to be robbers and thieves, the TNLA has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
