The junta-controlled Union Election Commission (UEC) announced on Sunday that it will not hold elections in 121 constituencies, stating that the areas are currently under the control of resistance groups.
These constituencies are included 56 Pyithu Hluttaw seats, 9 Amyotha Hluttaw (FPTP) seats and other 56 State and Region Parliament seats (FPTP), according to its statement.
In northern Shan State, the junta will not hold elections in the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA)-controlled townships of Namhsan, Manton, Kutkai, Namtu, Namhkam, and Momeik.
The junta will not hold elections in the townships of Hsenwi, Laukkai, Kunlong, and Konkyan, which are controlled by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).
In northern Shan State, other townships excluded from the junta’s elections include Mabein town, which is controlled by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), as well as townships controlled by the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA), and the United Wa State Army (UWSA).
The junta’s UEC has not included Kyaukme and Hsipaw on its list of areas where elections will not be held. Experts believe this indicates the junta will attempt to recapture control of these two townships before the election.
Also in Rakhine State, despite being controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), the junta did not include the townships of Ann, Taungup, Thandwe, and Gwa in Rakhine State on its list of areas where the election will not be held.
The junta’s election commission has announced that the election will be held in three phases, with the first phase set to begin on December 28. The National Unity Government (NUG) and other revolutionary forces have publicly stated that they do not recognize the election.
