Continuous airstrikes in Mogok, a township controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), have forced most of the town’s residents to flee in fear of being killed by junta bombs, according to the residents.
Today, only a few people can be seen on the roads and streets of Mogok. The majority of the town’s population has already fled to other cities and towns across the country, including Mandalay and Yangon.
“Most people have already fled Mogok, and the downtown area is almost deserted,” a resident told Shwe Phee Myay. The resident added that people are “very afraid” because of the continuous airstrikes in recent days. “There are now very few people left in Mogok,” the resident said.
Residents reported that two-thirds of the town’s population has already evacuated. Only a small number of households, those unable to afford the expenses of fleeing, have remained.
The junta’s military has been relentlessly targeting the TNLA-controlled Mogok. Recent airstrikes have resulted in mass casualties in the city, known as Myanmar’s beautiful “Ruby Land.”
On August 14, the junta’s military launched an airstrike on Nga Pat Tawng village in eastern Mogok Township, killing at least 21 civilians and injuring 10 others.
The attacks continued on August 17, when a morning airstrike on eastern Mogok killed three residents, including a child. The following day, an airstrike near the clock tower in Kyat Pyin ward, in the western part of the town, injured one man.
Meanwhile, a junta military unit from Nawnghkio is advancing toward Mogok along the Nawnghkio–Mogok Road. The troops are engaged in ongoing clashes with TNLA forces in villages along the route.
